Your home, considered together

A Basement Plan That Starts With How You Live

A basement may need to serve several purposes: a quiet place to work, room for guests, laundry or a space to watch a film. The first question is how those uses fit together around the stairs, existing supports and building systems.

If the plan includes a bedroom or a separate dwelling, raise that at the beginning. The intended use changes the questions that need answering before a layout becomes a construction scope.

Seattle Project: Reworking the Basement

NBE’s Seattle basement remodel combined structural layout changes with a bedroom, bathroom, laundry, sauna and media room. The project brought several uses into one coordinated lower-level plan.

The structural work is an important part of the story. A more useful room arrangement depended on resolving the support layout alongside plumbing, electrical and ventilation work. The project record shows why a basement remodel can involve much more than finishes.

Start With Seattle’s Permit Questions

Seattle SDCI’s remodeling guidance distinguishes simpler qualifying work from projects needing more detailed review. Structural changes and the intended use of a basement help determine what must be included in the design and permit application.

Confirm the property’s permitting jurisdiction, gather existing drawings and permit records, and identify whether the proposal changes structure or creates another dwelling. The city makes the permit determination for the actual project.

Start with what matters

Bring the Whole Project Into the Conversation

Tell us what is not working in your home, which spaces matter most and whether you have drawings already. Photos of the existing layout are useful starting points.

Together, we can discuss the proposed scope, design and engineering needs, access to the work area, selections and construction sequencing. Timing and budget depend on the property and the work agreed for it.

Seattle Remodeling Questions

Is a basement remodel the same as an ADU?

No. Additional rooms for the existing household and a separate dwelling have different planning implications. If independent living is the goal, identify that early and check Seattle’s current ADU requirements for the property.

Can a support post be moved to improve the layout?

The answer depends on the structure. A proposed change needs a defined support solution and the appropriate design and permit review. Do not assume a post can simply be removed because the new floor plan looks better.

Can I plan the laundry and bathroom with the rest of the basement?

Yes. NBE’s Seattle basement project includes both. Planning the room layout alongside plumbing, electrical and ventilation needs helps coordinate the work.

Should I request an estimate before I have finished plans?

You can start a conversation with your goals and existing information. Let us know what has been designed or approved already. Before we can prepare a reliable project-specific proposal, we need a defined scope and a review of the existing home.

Does NBE also work on additions, ADUs and custom homes?

Yes. Remodels, ADUs and Custom Homes are NBE’s main services. We can discuss which path fits your goals, then review its design, property and permit requirements.
